The official remake of the Tamil movie 'Kolamavu Kokila' starring Nayanthara, Good Luck Jerry amounts to a good adaptation and sticks to its 'dark-comedy' theme that it promised.
Quick Synopsis: To pay for her mother's treatment, Jerry starts working for Timmy, a drug supplier. Things take a wild turn when Jerry decides to quit her job.
Good Luck Jerry opens up with the aftermath of Jerry's father's family. Jerry's mother, Sarbati's (Mita Vashisht)source of income is from the 'momos' she sells. At the same time, Jerry (Janhvi Kapoor) works as a masseuse against her mother's wishes. After her mother is diagnosed with lung cancer, Jerry is thrown into the world of drug trafficking in hopes of earning quick money. As she makes a name in the industry, she gains a fair amount of people who dislike her as she is quick and expert at what she does without an ounce of suspicion by the police.
Now, when you're making a movie with 'dark comedy' as the theme, you need to know the difference between what's comedic and what is going off the track and does not makes sense. Good Luck Jerry manages to walk that thin line without any trepidations. The movie does not have a monotonous moment, the characters liven up the screen throughout the movie. Janhvi Kapoor shines as Jerry, her growth as an actor is clearly seen in the film, she plays the role of a shy, self-conscious girl with much ease and confidence. You get to see her true potential as an actor through jerry's risky journey. Deepak Dobriyal creates a laugh riot that elevates the movie, his presence in the entirety of the movie makes you cackle and hold on to your stomach from laughing. Mita Vashisht and Jaswant Singh Dalal do a great job at their respective roles and so do the characters.
Funnily enough, the movie is reminiscent of the good ol' Tom & Jerry show (towards the end) as it actually becomes a chase to find Jerry with Sushant Singh as Tom. Jerry is the quick-witted, sharp girl under the disguise of an honest, scared girl who isn't well aware of the ropes of life. A girl who is afraid of carrying cocaine with her but also won't hesitate to get someone killed if her life is threatened.
Siddharth Sengupta beautifully summarises the world of Jerry with this comical film but also at the heart of it shows you how young adults get tied down with responsibilities when they are forced to become the breadwinners for their families.
